CENTRAL LUPUS

Southwestern Lupus, to the southeast of Centaurus, falls at toward the lower left of the picture. Kakkab, Alpha Lupi, is the bright star to the lower right, while Beta Lupi is the lower of the pair of stars near the center. (The upper is Kappa Centauri.) Menkent, Theta Centauri, is at the upper right edge. Kakkab's reddish color is a result of absorption by the Earth's atmosphere..
